| The Chronicles of Narnia The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe Information on C.S. Lewis Clive Staples Lewis was born on November 29,1898 in Belfast, Northern Ireland. For his college education he went to the University of Oxford. Lewis was a very exceptional english student and won many awards for his english essays. He became a tutor at his college as well. Later, Lewis became the first Professor of Medieval and Renaissance Literature at the University of Cambridge. Lewis wrote books like the Space Trilogy and a book called Sin, the Fall and Redemption. His book The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe was his best selling novel. It sold more than 100 million copies in 41 different languages. Book Summary The book The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe is about four children, Lucy, Edmund, Susan, and Peter, who must go live with their uncle. Their uncle's house is a huge estate. One day they decide to play hide and seek in their Uncle's house. In one room there is a wardrobe. Lucy, the youngest, hides inside the wardrobe. As she walks deeper into the wardrobe another door is found. She walks through the door and finds herself in a strange, wintry place. This strange place is a land called Narnia and is full of magical creatures. When she comes back through the wardrobe to tell her brothers and sister about Narnia none of them believe her. Only when the children are all forced to hide inside the wardrobe, and find the door to Narnia, do they finally believe Lucy. While in Narnia the children find out about a witch and her evil plan. They also meet a special friend named Aslan. If you want to find out about the witch's sinister plan, the fate of the children, and the secrets of this magical place called Narnia, you will have to read this amazing book. . Excerpt from the book The excerpt I chose to read was on p. 193. This passage tells about the war between the good side of Narnia and the evil. Book Review This book is told from the viewpoint of C.S. Lewis. He tells great details of each character and what certain things look like. He quickly brings you into his imagined world of Narnia. There are two main conflicts in this book. The first is between the creatures in Narnia that side with the Witch and those that side with the creature Aslan. The second conflict is about a young boy named Edmund and whether he would be on Aslan's or the Witch's side. There are two major themes in this book: Good Versus Evil - The theme of good versus evil comes up a lot in the book. In this story, the good are those on Aslan's side and the evil are on the Witch's side. In this book there are many confrontations between the two sides. Man versus self - In the story one of the children, Edmund, is debating whether he should bring his brother and sisters to the evil witch's castle or not. I would recommend this book to kids or adults who like to read about fantasy and mythical places. Also, I would recommend this book to people who like to read about many adventures in one book. | | |
| Freedom is defined as the state of being free or at liberty, rather than in confinement or under physical restraint. It is also true that one can still be defined as a human being even if one is not granted sincere freedom. Despite the intangible nature of this celestial right, many a man has fought till the death to achieve it. It is a sad fact of our history as human beings that we could, and still can, deny such a God given right, we can so easily only think of what we desire, and so thoroughly we live and prosper in a world where children are crying and screaming in the night for things we, as citizens of this great United States, take advantage of every day! And, no, I am not speaking of the mere fact that they may not have their own freedoms. But, as the descendent of the people that signed to the words: "We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity..." in our very own Constitution; we have an undebatable resposibility to hold up this goal. And now that this world is far more advanced in its communications, economy, and technology it is our duty- no our birthright- that we expand this goal to benefit others, and not just ourselves. It is sad that so many of us limit our freedom to those boundaries. Of course there is always the debate of: "So, what are we going to do? Be the world's savior so often that we will soon need our own!?" It is childish to think with such a narrow mind, and of course we do not necessarily have to help every single third world country and completely run ourselves into the ground. That would be completely rash and utterly irresponsible. Although, we need to wipe clean the apparent stench of greed filling the pockets of the ones who benefit from such animosities- such as war, violence, illegal substances, and any other malefactor that creates our present day nation. Of course these components of everyday society do create their own disputes, which will also be recognized, it is no use in denying that our own human tendencies of greed, envy, violence, ruthlessness, corruptibility, and any other shortcoming are the undeniably precise cause to freedom's challenge. Perhaps the most world renowned problem is poverty. When you turn on the news the headlines constantly blink the current situations of countries that are less fortunate that us. Countries such as Sierra Leone and Ethiopia are two of the most common ones mentioned. Although, they are not the only ones that should be recognized. Others like: Tanzania, Burundi, and Malawi are in desperate need too. All five of these countries are among the top most underdeveloped countries in the world, which causes them to be the top five countries with the lowest Gross domestic product per Capita. In other words, they export close to nothing, and import even less- causing a severe depression of money flow. And despite our advanced technology, easy to use communication systems, and flourishing economy, it's funny that the only countries that most of us have ever heard of off of that list are Sierra Leone and Ethiopia, only two out of the five. What happened to the other three? As fervently stated before, these countries are only a few among the thousands that do need help. There is no need to break the back of our financially based country, but, if we are still supporting an "established justice, and the insurance of domestic tanquility," then we are obligated to recognize the true number of third world countries that we live amongst. And through the recognition of these country' dilemmas we must take note of other common animosities that are strewn throughout these countries. In one brief example: slavery. It is common knowledge that slavery was declared illegal in 1865. And the problem with this is that many people believe that just because something is said to be illegal that, automatically, no one will practise it any longer. Unfortunately this is not true. In African countries such as Mauritania and Sudan, and in Middle Eastern Kuwait slavery is an everyday routine. People are tricked with the opportunities of jobs, good food, and shelter to have it all shatter before their eyes into small fragments of long hours, jail cells, and daily beatings. Some forms of slavery are so brutal that they give people the illusion of an actual job. These trivial jobs of carpet making, or field plowing are passed down from generation to generation with meager pay; a pay that is supposed to relieve a debt that grows out of control in leaps and bounds. They are slaves to a debt that was never meant to be repayed in the first place. It is a difficult task to sum up such a heart wrenching topic into a three to five minute speech. If it were possible, we would be living in a true Utopia. It is sad to realize that freedom's true challenge is man himself. It is unfair to say that every person in the world is responsible for racism, slavery, religious persecution, prejudice, sexism, greed, and all the other ills included in our world today. Infect, it would be completely and utterly false to say such a spiteful thing. It is a favorable opinion that God created man mostly good, but it is also its own undoing. We wish to neglect wickedness so often that it almost becomes routine. When something has become a daily routine we fail to act on it. And when we do not act on it, it will only continue to grow into something more terrible. All is not lost though, if we allow ourselves to recognize the true evils in our world today, we can work together in order to suppress them. So, I will give you your own challenge: remember these iridescent words: "America! God to mend thine every flaw, Confirm thy soul in self-control, Thy liberty in law," and truly live them out so that we may not only have that pure and beautiful nation our forefathers sought to create, but the beautiful world that God sought to create with the first breath he breathed into the lungs of man. | | |
